What to Do When You Feel Paralysed and Don’t Know Where to Start
Have you ever woke up and you just can’t face your home. There are piles of stuff to deal with, mess everywhere, loads you need to do but you retreat to the sofa with your phone in your face because that feels like it’s the only thing you’re capable of..? Like you want to get moving, but you don’t even know where to start? I get it 💜 It happens to all of us. You’re stuck. The good news.. this blog post is here to get you unstuck.
Here’s how to get moving, even when you feel paralysed. Let’s work through this together, shall we..?
1. Get Ready – Put Yourself in Motion
The first gear to getting moving is you. Looking good = feeling good. When you’re dressed, your hair is done, and you feel put together, you show up better for yourself. When you don’t… you feel sluggish, tired, and rubbish. There’s a direct correlation!
Take it one step at a time. You can even sneak in starting to get tidied up here.. As you apply your makeup, style your hair, or get dressed. you can put each item away, tidy it in its proper place.
And last of all for this step: Combine it with something motivational. Play music, a podcast, an audiobook, (or even one of my own episodes from Christine at Home - The Podcast) to reset your mindset while you move. By the time you’re done, you’re feeling a lot more motivated already!
2. Brain Dump – Clear Your Head
Next, grab a notebook, a piece of paper, or your phone. Get everything out of your head. Your to-do list and everything else that’s swirling around in your brain.
Seeing it all in front of you reduces overwhelm and gives you clarity. Pen and paper is better here but done is better than perfect so if you find yourself wanting to reach for the notes app, then go for it. The goal is the same: get started.
3. Go Outside – Reset Your Mind
If you’re still not feeling up to it, then sometimes the best thing you can do before tackling tasks at home is to leave the house. Go for a walk, get some fresh air, drive to the shops.. anything to get outside!
The key is to keep moving. Don’t sit down as soon as you get back. Walking and being in a new space helps your brain reset, gives you perspective, and creates the energy to come back ready to act.
Once you return, you’ll feel more alert, grounded, and ready to tackle the tasks you’ve already planned.
4. Pick 3 Realistic Tasks
With your fresh found energy, go to your brain dump and pick 3 tasks that feel realistic for now. It’s time to chip away it at.
Focus on tasks that will give you quick wins and a sense of accomplishment. Small steps create momentum.
5. Start Small – Follow the Order
The mess still looking overwhelming? Let’s get practical then and go through the order of events. Start small and follow these steps:
Clear the floors – empty space gives an instant sense of calm.
Clear surfaces – desks, counters, tables. Less visual clutter = less mental clutter.
Wash away / put things back – everything goes in its rightful home.
Follow the order and don’t try to skip ahead. One small win builds energy for the next, and suddenly, you’re moving without even realising it.
6. Celebrate & Keep Going
Breathe. One step at a time. Slowly does it 💗 Every little action counts. Be proud that you got moving and know it WILL get done that way. Listen to something motivational as you go (your favourite music, podcast, or even mine!) and be kind to yourself.
The most important step? Just start. Once you’re moving, momentum carries you forward. And that stuck, paralysed feeling? It starts to lift.
Remember: You don’t need motivation to start. You just need a plan, a small first step, and the courage to take it. And if you ever feel stuck again, come back to this simple routine. It works every time 💜✨
